Deforestation and why I became a Pescetarian...

Last week I was talking to my sister about my new venture, being a Pescetarian (also called pesco-vegetarianism, is the practice of a diet that includes seafood and excludes mammals and birds. In addition to fish or shellfish, a pescetarian diet typically includes some or all of vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, beans, eggs, and dairy). I've been Pescetarian for 3 weeks now.

Why I did it? It's not for dietary reasons, because I want to lose weight, but it's because I'm just a big animal activist. I just feel really bad about how the animals are treated. Did you know that in high-pressure agriculture, they keeps cows, calves, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and other animals in overcrowded stalls, cages, crates, or sheds where they can't even turn around or take even a single step for their entire lives. I saw that movie, Food Inc., and it was horrible how the animals were treated! There were these baby chicks, who were kept in this housing where from day one of their birth (as an egg), they didn't even see sunlight, not even when they were being slaughtered. Also they were so cramped that some died and they were forced to live with other dead chickens. When I saw chickens like that I imagined dogs being treated like that and I seriously started crying. It's just soOo inhumane. Then I also saw this other movie called Temple Grandin, where she designs humane livestock facilities, it was an amazing movie where it definitely touched my heart and I really wanted to do something great like that too.

"Animals are not ours to use for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation, or any other reason. By switching to a plant-base diet, human societies will be able to alleviate the needless suffering and deaths of countless animals, the irreparable damage done onto the earth like air and water pollution, the erosion of lands, waste of precious energy, and deforestation. Raising and eating meat leaves behind an environmental toll that generations to come will be forced to pay." (source)

Also another reason I became Pescetarian is
my recent passion for the environment. Did you know that McDonalds and KFC, wiped out acres of the Amazon forest for soya farming. Soya to feed their chickens and chickens for the chicken nuggets I used to eat. McDonalds and KFC are two of the biggest culprits in rain forest destruction. Between May 2000 and August 2006, Brazil lost nearly 150,000 square kilometers of forest. Reasons: clearing for cattle pasture, colonization and subsequent subsistence agriculture, infrastructure improvements, commercial agriculture, and logging.

See, when agricultural land becomes unproductive, uhh... basically when they've sucked up all the nutrients from the soil (usually after about three years), it's cheaper to clear new land than to fertilize it or replenish nutrients that were drained from the soil. Some good farmers like this one winery that me and Keith visited called Grgich Hills, in Napa, California uses Biodynamic farming. Basically they feed the soil, keeping it alive using "the earth's natural cycles and preparations to produce balance in the soil and plants." Also they can get more grapes out of a Vine and the Vine can last longer, 80 to 100 years old. Genius!!

Now, hmm? Why is losing the Rain Forest bad?
Did you know tropical forests cover only six percent of Earth's land surface, but they happen to contain between 70% and 90% of all of the world's species. With deforestation, we are losing between 50 and 100 animal and plant species each day. And many of these species are now facing the possibility of extinction. Then there's medicine. As of 1991, over 25% of the world's pharmaceutical products come from tropical plants. With extinction of multiple species of plants and animals, we might be destroying the cures for many of the diseases we have today.

But I think the worst cause of losing the Rain Forest is climate change due to the losing trees. See this is how it works, alive plants and trees absorb the carbon dioxide (Water vapor (the oceans, lakes, etc) produces the most CO2, followed by dying vegetation, followed by animals and bacteria, followed by volcanoes, followed by the burning of fossil fuels). Now losing these trees can increase in the carbon level and other greenhouse gas (including methane, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide, and ozone) levels into the atmosphere leading to an increase in temperature, and eventually a change in climate and weather. If there are additional greenhouse gases, there will be a gradual increase in temperature on Earth's surface. Leading to changes in weather patterns, sea levels, and other cycles in nature. Hmm? Hurricanes, melting of the glaciers, heat waves, ocean waters are colder, weird weather patterns, and I can go on!!

See everything we do is always connected to something bigger. I mean who would have known that last month when I ate chicken nuggets from Mc Donald's would add to animal cruelty, deforestation, leading to global warming? Please spread the word, I don't expect everyone to be a Pescetarian, but please think about buying food that treats the animals, workers, the environment, and the consumers with respect! Look for Organic Food.
